Financing Non-Governmental Organizations from Public Funds of Local Self-Governments in Slovakia

2008-2010

Goals of the analysis:

  • Map mechanismes of direct and indirect support to public benefit activities and NGOs on the level of local self-governments in Slovakia.
  • Quantitative and (eventually) qualitative analysis of subsidy and/or other mechanisms of local self-governments for public benefit acitivities (incl. subsidies to NGOs).
  • Informing target groups about project outputs.

This analysis aimed to map the financing NGOs from public funds at the level of villages and towns in Slovakia. Through a questionnaire survey among all municipalities and cities in Slovakia and thanks to official data from the DataCenter it is trying to describe in the most complex way how support from local and city governments for public activities provided by NGOs looks like.

In many regards the data has not been published so far in Slovakia, since the cooperation of local and city governments with non-profits has not been of specific interest. The collected data of time and capacity reasons, do not cover the period of 2009-2010, when as a result of changed economic situation, there was a significant deterioration in the financial situation of local governments. This fact is likely to be reflected in supporting NGOs consequently. Despite that we believe the published findings may contribute to higher awarness among stakeholders and that ultimately may help eventual improvement in this area.

The project was supported by the Open Society Foundation Bratislava.
